University of Cambridge

Chemistry Department, Riser Q

The Riser Q project was the largest and most challenging decommissioning and remediation work that the University had embarked upon and consisted of the removal and disposal of radiological contaminated asbestos ductwork that ran up a service riser from sub-basement level through seven stories. The project was unique, extremely complex and directly affected the operation of teaching and research laboratories for the Department of Chemistry.

The project had to satisfy not only the legislative requirements of the Ionising Regulations 1999 and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 (which in themselves require opposing disposal and treatment methodologies) but also the scrutiny of the Environment Agency, Fire and Rescue service, the Health and Safety Executive (who undertook two site visits) and the University's own specialist advisers from the safety and security offices, fire safety and asbestos management teams.

The project posed unique challenges which required "out of the box" thinking, immediate responsive actions and extensive forward planning. The riser contained live services which had to be maintained throughout the project and at all times, close liaison and negotiation was required with the building users and adjoining building owners, health and safety was of paramount importance.
