University of Cambridge

Library

The University library is a landmark building of architectural significance designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built in the early 1930's, it is one of the world's most important copyright library's.

We have completed the Project Management of the final phase of roof repairs to the original building. The project commenced on site in June 2011 and completed in February 2012. The works comprise extensive scaffolding of the building to obtain access to the main roof areas, stripping off of the lower perimeter section of tiles, oak timber replacement, replacement of the existing corroded galvanised steel gutters with modern aluminium materials and reinstatement of the unique purpose made drainage tiles which have obviated the need for external gutters since the building's construction.

The project has posed unique problems and challenges. Not least keeping the priceless contents of the library dry and safe from the weather over the winter period, being sensitive to the needs of the Library and its users, working around quiet periods and reducing the impact of the extensive and intrusive building works.
