The Senate House, Cambridge.

The Senate House, Cambridge.

We are currently project managing the works to replace the below ground heating pipework connecting the Old Schools plant room to the Senate House, both Grade 1 listed buildings.

The heating to the building had failed and trial excavation established there was extensive corrosion, to the existing steel pipework, below the historic paving in the courtyard and between the two buildings.

The existing 1920’s steel pipework is largely surrounded by asbestos, both externally and where it enters the building, below ground.

We are coordinating the licensed asbestos removal contractors (Jackson Environmental), building contractors (Millcam) and heating contractors (CPS) to carefully take up the existing stone paving, excavate down to the top of the existing pipework duct, remove the asbestos insulation, contaminated pipework and surrounding materials, replace the defective pipework and then reinstate the historic pavings.

The Senate House is frequently used for major University of Cambridge events and the excavations are having to be closed and then re-opened to enable events to proceed, with as little disturbance as possible.
