Replacement Chiller Units & Plant Deck

The University Library is a Grade 2 listed, landmark building of architectural significance. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built in the early 1930’s, it is one of the world’s most important copyright libraries.

During our decade long consultancy relationship with the University of Cambridge, Fox Associates have been privileged to be appointed on many high-profile lead consultancy roles for this internationally significant building.

Project Overview

We were appointed as lead consultant project managers for the replacement of the existing chiller units, relocated to anew plant deck on the roof of the building.

To maintain and preserve the library’s priceless collections, at the correct temperature and humidity, large chiller units are required to continually condition certain book stacks and specialised storage spaces.Unregulated fluctuations in temperature and humidity could lead to the loss of unique collections and materials.

The Library’s collections are genuinely priceless and contain many 1st editions of unique scientific and academic literature of international significance.

The logistical constraints to achieve the successful completion of the project were significant. The library had to continue its function, as an undisturbed academic space, whilst removing the existing steel plant deck and installing a new platform, secured to the superstructure of the building.

When the new plant deck was installed, large & heavy plant had to be crane lifted over the occupied building(above photograph)with new supply pipework connected to the existing distribution system.

Over the duration of the project there could only be carefully controlled loss of conditioned air to the collections(for a very limited period), during low humidity weather.

A seamless transition was required from the old system to the operation and full function of the new, energy efficient chiller units.
