Re – Roofing & Replacement of Rain Water Disposal System

The University Library is a Grade 2 listed, landmark building of architectural significance. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built in the early 1930’s, it is one of the world’s most important copyright libraries.

During our decade long consultancy relationship with the University of Cambridge, Fox Associates have been privileged to be appointed on many high-profile lead consultancy roles for this internationally significant building.

Project Overview

We were appointed as lead consultant for the project management of significant roof repairs, material replacements and external improvements to the original building.

Extensive scaffold and temporary roofing were required to a significant proportion of the building, followed by the removal of large sections of roof tiles and timber rafters to access the original internal, corroded cast iron gutters.

The works required the replacement of oak soffits and fascias, structural timbers, purpose made drainage tiles and bespoke lead detailing.

The original unique gutter system (photographed opposite) was replaced with a new aluminum alternative, designed with improved capacity, outlet and overflow details because of the changing rainfall patterns experienced since the building’s construction.

The project presented many challenges, not least protecting the priceless collections from water ingress over the 18-month project duration and ensuring the building continued its function as a quiet academic space, undisturbed over the length of the project
