Replacement Heating System

The University Library is a Grade 2 listed, landmark building of architectural significance. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built in the early 1930’s, it is one of the world’s most important copyright libraries.

During our decade long consultancy relationship with the University of Cambridge, Fox Associates have been privileged to be appointed on many high-profile lead consultancy roles for this internationally significant building.

Project Overview

We were appointed as project managers for there placement and improvement of the building’s existing, under-performing boilers and heating infrastructure over an 18-month period.

The project required the complete removal of the building’s existing basement boilers & ancillary plant, with transference of heat generation to external temporary boilers which continued providing the undisturbed hot water needs for the building, its collections and occupants over a full heating season.

With the old boilers and plant removed, significant asbestos contamination could be removed prior to the installation of the latest gas condensing boilers, control equipment and a new flue, to the full height of the building’s tower.

Management of the continuing heat and humidity requirements (for preservation of the building’s collections) was a continuing challenge throughout the project. The photograph opposite shows the new flue and termination detail at the top of the tower, overlooking Cambridge.

The project presented many challenges with the technical issues of the existing heating system, listed status and asbestos contamination but, also those associated with its significant status and maintaining its full and undisturbed academic function.

As the project was also located at the front of the building the impact of the works had to be minimised visually, acoustically and without disturbance to the main pedestrian access.
